One of the most common questions we get at our shop is about the law. People want privacy, and they want heat rejection. But nobody wants a fix-it ticket from the Highway Patrol. So, what exactly are the rules regarding the front windows on a car in California as of 2026?

The laws can be confusing, especially if you're reading outdated information online. As a professional automotive window tinting service, it's our job to keep you informed and street-legal while maximizing your vehicle's comfort.

The 70% VLT Rule for Front Side Windows

Let's get straight to the point. In California, you cannot legally apply pitch-black, 5% limo tint to your driver and passenger side front windows. The law mandates that the front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to pass through (this is known as 70% VLT, or Visual Light Transmission).

Here's the catch. Most modern automobile windows come from the factory with a slight tint built into the glass, usually around 70% to 80% VLT. If you add aftermarket tint over factory-tinted glass, you run the risk of dropping below the legal threshold. However, you are allowed a 4-inch tint strip at the top of the windshield.

Staying Cool Without Breaking the Law

This sounds restrictive, right? How do you block the heat if you can't darken the glass? The answer lies in modern technology. With high-end ceramic films, you can apply a nearly transparent 70% or 80% ceramic film to your front windows car glass.

This clear ceramic film will keep you fully legal while still blocking 99% of UV rays and rejecting a massive amount of infrared heat. You get all the thermal benefits of a dark tint, without the dark appearance that attracts police attention.

For the rear side windows and the back windshield, California law is much more relaxed. You can go as dark as you want, provided you have dual side mirrors. When you visit a reputable automotive window tinting service like Riverside Tints, we'll walk you through the legal limits and help you choose the perfect film combination for your vehicle.
